Introduction

For our project we've decided to focus on the Web Comics and the communities enveloping the creators and fans. As we were getting started, we determined rather quickly that the web comic universe is gargantuan. From commercially communal sites like KeenSpot to the less ad-ridden Dayfree Press to the big shot independents like VG Cats, there is a vast spectrum of creativity and diversity that simply cannot be portrayed both accurately and completely in a site this small. As such, we knew we'd have to focus ourselves, and naturally must state that this project will NOT strive to provide an absolute vision of said comic universe (that's a feat we'll leave for an eager team of, let's say, 7,000 ambitious anthropologists or 300 Spartans).

So what we've done is attempted to summarize overreaching themes we feel are present within the community by examining one comic in particular: Penny Arcade. We have tried to provide loose portraits of how PA fits in to the web comic universe, and give general information about the world of comics outside of PA as well. However, most of our specific research revolves around this comic, its history, and its forum-based community of fans.
